Apple Reveals Its Latest Augmented Reality Framework ARKit 2
Announced during WWDC 2018, the all new ARKit 2 that allows developers create persistent AR experiences tied to a specific location, along with image tracking and object detection. Since last fall, Apple has been releasing new AR features at a rapid speed, making this a third major update.
ARKit basically gives developers a set of
tools to create beautiful AR experiences that allow users to see world in both
productive and fun ways. In this article, we’ll see each and every update that
Apple has released with ARKIT2
Shared Experiences:
The new ARKit 2 comes with shared experiences that allows multiple
users to interact with same AR experiences. In fact, company even demonstrated
a new LEGO AR City game and showed how users can interact with same LEGO
characters, vehicles, and even the entire set together in real-time.
Besides this, it is now possible to make AR even more fun and engaging
as it now allows multiple users to collaborate projects and play a game
together. Developers can insert a spectator mode so that friends and family can
interact with same AR experience from a different iOS device.
Furthermore, ARKit 2 also has extended support for image tracking and
detection, making it possible to detect and identify sculptures or toys. Plus,
Apple has also added the ability to automatically create reflections of
real-wolrd objects in new ARKit 2.
USDz & QuickLook:
With the release of ARKit 2, Apple has announced its new augmented
reality file format — USDz (Universal Scene Description). The company has
partnered with Pixar to streamline the process of accessing and sharing USDz
files. This new file will be compatible with Autodesk, Adobe, Quixel, PTC, and
Sketchfab.
ARKit 2 and USDz file support will be available coming fall as a free
software update to iPhone 6s and later, iPad 5th & 6th Generation, and all
iPad Pro Models.
QuickLook, on the other hand, lets users to place 3D model objects into
real-world to check how something would look in a space.
Measure App:
Measure is the new AR app that will come in iOS 12
that will help users quickly measure the size of real-world objects. As the
name suggests, this new AR app can measure the dimensions of objects like boxes
or photoframes and shows exact measurements just like a ruler. Furthermore, the
app can also take a picture and share it with others within the app only.
